Drowning Anna by Sue Mayfield
Song playlist:
1) Otherside by Red Hot Chili Peppers
As well as being one of my favorite bands ever, the song "Otherside" by the RHCP is one of their most popular songs. If you listen closely and pay attention to the lyrics, you can pick up on some 'suicide' characteristics. Right at the beginning of the novel, the reader is introduced to a 15-year old attempting suicide, so it's fitting that this song characterizes that part in the book.
One of the lyrics in this song that really sticks out to me is "once you've gone, you can never go back." This one lyrics (as well as the rest of the song) is so deep and it relates to what Anna is going through.
2) I'll be there for you by The Rembrandts
More commonly known as the theme song from the sitcom "Friends", this song reminds me of when Anna and Hayley become friends. Hayley is one of the first friends that Anna has when she moves from London to the new school, so I feel as if this song truly shows what kind of friendship they have. The chorus, "I'll be there for you," reminded me of the relationship that Hayley had with Anna. Anna was the new girl in school, so Hayley befriends her, and this song describes their relationship.
3) One by Metallica
One (haha punny) of Metallica's most famous songs, the lyrics of this song are pretty deep. I thought of this song and it's meaningful lyrics when Anna's mother and father are waiting at the hospital for her daughter to come out of the coma that she was in. A lyric that sticks out to me is "Can't tell if this is true or a dream," and that's probably what Anna was thinking.
4) Somebody Else by The 1975
This song (as well as every other song by The 1975) has a lot of deep meanings. One of the deepest lyrics in the song is "so I heard you found somebody else... and at first, I thought it was a lie, I took all of my things that make sound, the rest I can do without...". Although this song is more aimed towards relationships/love/etc, I feel as if that lyrics sort of represents the relationship that Anna had with Hayley. Hayley decided to take Anna under her wing when she moved to the new school, and then one day, for no apparent reason, Hayley turns her back on Anna.
5) Basket Case by Green Day
Green Day's songs are some of the best songs ever created (in my opinion) and Basket Case is one of their songs that, like the other songs that I have talked about, have really dark, meaningful lyrics. When I think of what Anna was going through and how much of a negative impact Hayley had on her, I think of this song.
6) Dark Times by The Weeknd
One of today's biggest R&B artists, The Weeknd's "Dark Times" (which is a collaboration song with Ed Sheeran), has some dark lyrics. One of the key lyrics in the song is "In my dark times I've still got some problems I know, Driving too fast but just moving too slow". Anna's depression in this novel is truly showed through this song and this lyric, specifically.
7) She Lays Down by The 1975
Sorry, this band is my life, so they're in here twice. The song "She Lays Down" is about Matty's (lead singer) depression and about his relationship with his mom. My favorite lyric in this song is "Well we got a plane, going to see my dad again, she prayed that we fell from the sky, simply to alleviate the pain". I picked this song because a) the lyrics are super depressing (the song is literally about a time when Matty was super young and his mother had to physically lay down next to him in order to love him) and b) we can see the relationship that Matty has with his mother (sort of similar to the relationship that Anna has with her parents in the novel).
